Two hours for a neglected single

Everything removable is out in the first ten minutes and down to the tank. While it soaks, the cavity is coated in gel and left to work, then scraped back with a plastic blade. Wire wool takes enamel with it. It stays in the bag.

The door glass is the part people see. Where the maker designed the door to split, we take it apart and clean between the panes; riveted doors are cleaned whole. A single oven that has gone a year without attention takes about two hours, and a double nearer three. There is nothing to burn off afterwards, so you can cook the same evening.

Grease is half of it in this town. Affinity Water supplies Hemel from the chalk at roughly 283 mg/l, and steam leaves minerals behind as a milky film on the inside of the door. Leave the oven off beforehand, ideally overnight. A cavity that was at 200 degrees an hour earlier cannot take the gel, and waiting for it to cool is time you have paid for. Shutting the cat in another room helps too.

Hobs, hoods and microwaves

Cast iron pan supports from a gas hob go in the tank with the racks and come back close to new. Ceramic and induction tops are done in place with a scraper and a cream. A stainless canopy hood with washable baffles is quick work. Microwaves go in alongside the oven if you want them.

Some ovens have catalytic liners, the rough matt panels on the side walls, which clean themselves at high heat. Those we leave to do their job, and we give the door, the base and the racks our full attention.

Range cookers and AGAs

A 90cm range has two cavities side by side, a grill, a wide hob and often a storage drawer full of trays, which is why it sits at £143 on the list. A 100cm master range is £167. AGAs are priced by the number of ovens, £143 for two and £187 for four. The gel only goes on a cold cavity, so an AGA that normally stays lit wants switching off the evening before.
