Boxmoor is the HP1 neighbourhood below the Old Town, and it is where Hemel Hempstead station sits, so our vans pass through most days. Prices match the rest of town: a bedroom carpet is £36, a single oven £77 and a two bedroom tenancy clean £243.
Edwardian and 1930s villas
The houses here have little in common with the new town units. Much of Boxmoor, and Felden beyond it, is Edwardian or 1930s villas with bigger rooms, original detail and, more often than not, wool or wool-blend carpet. Wool is where the local water bites. The supply comes off the chalk at around 283 mg/l, and residue left in the fibre dries the pile stiff, so our last pass on wool is an acid rinse. A through lounge in one of these houses is £61 as one room. It still takes a while, with a radiator run at each end to work under.
The station streets
Dacorum’s controlled parking zone covers the streets round the station, and its permits moved to the Zatpermit system in October 2025. If we need a bay in the zone it is charged at cost, and a visitor permit from you saves a walk with the oven racks. Otherwise we park outside the zone. It adds a few minutes at each end.
Commuter flats turning over
Trains from here run to Euston with London Northwestern, plus some Avanti calls, and Apsley and Kings Langley are the next stops south. The flats within walking distance of the platform turn over on a commuter rhythm: end of the month, often a Friday, and the agent wants them empty before we start. Our move-out clean runs from £156 for a studio to £425 for four bedrooms, the oven can be added for £31, and carpets booked with it are £29 a bedroom.
Mud from the moor
Houses at the edge of the Boxmoor Trust land pick up their own kind of dirt. The grazing meadows beside the Grand Union Canal are walked hard, dog owners especially, and what comes back through the door is wet clay and grass. It dries to a fine grit at the base of the pile in the hall and in front of the sofa, where a household vacuum cannot reach. From October it barely dries at all.
Keys and regular visits
A steady run of regular work comes from the family houses. A weekly cleaner is £23 an hour, or £24 fortnightly, three hours at a time and with the same person each visit. Most Boxmoor customers leave us a key. They are on the 07:20, and we are not.
We drive in through town or off the A41, depending on the hour. Across the canal you are on our Apsley round, and up the hill to the north-west lies Warners End. The full service list is on the Hemel Hempstead page.
Questions we get asked
Do you work around Hemel Hempstead station?
Yes, all of that corner of Boxmoor. It falls inside Dacorum’s controlled parking zone, so a visitor permit helps if you have one. If not, we park outside the zone and carry the kit in.
What would carpets in a three bedroom villa cost?
Three bedrooms at £36, a through lounge at £61 and a flight of stairs at £41 make £210. A landing adds £9. Send the room list and we will add it up before we come out.
Are wool carpets safe with you?
Yes. The last rinse on wool is acidified, because water at around 283 mg/l off the chalk leaves a residue that stiffens the pile as it dries.
Do you come out on Saturdays?
Yes, at the weekday price. Saturday is often easier near the station, since the commuter cars have gone and there is room for the van.
