Working round a 1947 new town
Hemel became a new town in 1947 and grew as a string of neighbourhood units, each with a shopping parade and a strip of green between it and the next. The green wedges have no roads across them. So a van going from Grovehill over to Bennetts End heads back towards the Marlowes first, and we plan each day neighbourhood by neighbourhood.
The Old Town is another matter. Georgian fronts line the High Street, a handful of buildings are Tudor, and the houses behind them tend to have steep, narrow stairs. Dacorum's controlled parking zone takes in the Old Town, the centre and the streets by the station, and the permits there moved to Zatpermit in October 2025. Parking is charged only where we need a bay, at what it actually costs.
Water is the constant. Affinity Water pumps it from the chalk at about 283 mg/l as calcium carbonate, which is hard by English standards. You see it as a crust round the taps, and as a white bloom on shower glass a few weeks after anyone last scrubbed it. Our cleaners carry an acid descaler for this alone.
Timing is the last piece. The Plough, the six mini roundabouts everyone here calls the Magic Roundabout, jams at both rush hours, and the Leighton Buzzard Road does the same. An Old Town job starting before 08:00 is easy to keep; one booked for nine often slips. Apsley work usually goes mid-morning once the canal end of town has cleared, and round the station in Boxmoor we like an early start.

The minimum charge on one-off work is £67. Parking or congestion charges, where a visit needs them, are added at cost. On end of tenancy work, anything we cleaned that the clerk marks down gets a free re-clean, as long as you tell us within 48 hours.

Can you work in a top floor maisonette with no lift?
Yes, and plenty of our work in the maisonette blocks is exactly that. With three or four floors of concrete stair and no lift, getting everything up there takes a while. Give us the floor number when you book and we will allow the time.
